“Caring for Creation, Living the Gospel: A Summer Reflection on Faith, Ecology, and the Assumption of Mary”

Dear Parishioners,

I pray that you are all keeping well despite the sizzling summer heat. Each year, we are witnessing more extreme climate conditions — a clear sign of the urgent ecological challenges facing our world. As a Church, we are not mere spectators. We are called to respond. For many years now, the Catholic Church has been advocating care for our common home, a mission that is both spiritual and urgent.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ — a prophetic document that urges all people of goodwill to undergo an ecological conversion. Likewise, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan issued a pastoral letter entitled “Mi yo, Kiwamete Yokatta” (Behold, It Was Very Good), echoing the biblical truth that all creation is a gift from God and must be treated with reverence and care.

Living with an integral ecological sense is not just a modern trend — it is living the Gospel. When we care for the earth, we care for the poor, the vulnerable, and the generations to come. Two months ago, many of you joined us in our parish event where we watched a film and shared thoughts on this ecological conversion of the heart. Thank you for your presence, your insights, and your desire to grow in this mission of care.

As we move into August, we also prepare to celebrate the great Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This dogma, solemnly declared by Pope Pius XII in 1950, came after the world had endured the horrors of war and destruction. The Assumption proclaims that Mary was taken body and soul into heaven, reminding us of the sacredness of the human body and of all physical creation.

Our faith teaches us that we are not only spiritual beings. Our bodies, too, are gifts that deserve care and attention. In the same way, the earth — which nourishes and sustains our bodies — must be protected and cherished.

May this summer be a time not only of rest and refreshment but also of deeper reflection on how we live as stewards of creation. Let us grow together as a community rooted in love — for God, for each other, and for all life, especially the most fragile.

猛暑が続くこの夏、皆さまが健やかに過ごされていることを心よりお祈り申し上げます。年々、気候変動の影響が深刻になっていることを私たちは肌で感じています。地球環境に対する無関

心や放置の積み重ねが、今の結果を生み出しているのです。

こうした時代にあって、私たちの教会は長年、「被造物を大切にする心」を宣伝してきました。今年は、教皇フランシスコによる回勅『ラウダート・シ』が発表されてから 10 年の節目の年で もあります。この回勅は、すべての人々に「エコロジカル的回心」への歩みを呼びかけていま

す。

また、日本のカトリック司教団も『見よ、きわめて良かった』という牧書を発表し、聖書の中

で神がすべての創造物を「良いもの」とされたことを思い起こさせています。すべてのいのち、すべての存在は、神からの賜物なのです。

エコロジカル的理性をもって生きることは、単なる社会運動ではなく、福音を生きることそのものです。地球を大切にすることは、貧しい人々、弱い立場の人々、そして次の世代のいのちを守ることにつながります。

2 か月前、私たちの教会で開催された映画上映会と分かち合いの時間では、多くの方が集い、

「エコロジカルな心の回心」について共に考えることができました。ご参加くださった皆さんに心から感謝いたします。

そして、8 月 15 日は聖母の被昇天の祭日を迎えます。この教義は、1950 年に教皇ピウス 12 世によって宣言されました。第二次世界大戦の傷跡が残る中、人間のいのちと尊厳をあらためて見つめ直すきっかけとして、聖母が魂だけでなく身体ごと天に挙げられたという信仰が高らかに示されたのです。

私たちは霊的な存在であるだけでなく、身体という賜物も神から与えられています。そして、この身体を養い、生かしてくれる地球もまた、正しく大切にされるべき存在です。

この夏、心と体の休息だけでなく、「わたしたちは創造物の守り手としてどう生きているか」

を考える時ともなりますように。神さま、互い、そしてすべてのいのちを愛する共同体として、さらに歩みを進めていきましょう。
